It may be hard to believe, but I used to be one of those people who thought only the police needed guns. Then I worked for 13 years in child welfare, the last year as a child abuse investigator for the State of Kansas. I saw firsthand, over and over again, how absolutely worthless protective orders are. They are simply a tool for the prosecution to use after the fact.
Prior to working in child welfare, I worked for three years in the mental health department of a maximum security prison. While there, part of my job was to review new inmates files to see if they needed mental health services. To say that, between the two jobs, I was intimately knowledgeable about the evil things people will do would be an understatement.
That kind of exposure to what’s out there can sure make a person think. It got me thinking that maybe a handgun for protection wouldn’t be such a bad thing. However, after I made the decision to get a handgun, it took me three years to find someone to help guide me. After that I promised myself I’d do what I could to make sure no one else who wanted to learn had as many struggles as I did.

Since then a lot has changed. I always joke that some people drink the Kool-Aid, but I filled a pool and dove right in. Now I enjoy all aspects of personal protection and shooting for sport. I’m working on a book about my journey. I’m also creating video content for new shooters to help them get started. I want to help them so they don’t have to be embarrassed or lost like I was.
